FOSTER CITY, Calif. / Oct 31, 2025 / Business Wire / Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: GILD) today announced it has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Prix Galien USA Award for Best Pharmaceutical Product for Yeztugo® (lenacapavir), the company’s twice-yearly injectable HIV-1 capsid inhibitor that provides adults and adolescents (≥35kg) at risk of HIV-1 acquisition with a new, highly effective option for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of HIV. The award, which recognizes outstanding pharmaceutical products for their contributions to improving human health, is a testament to Gilead’s long-standing commitment to HIV innovation.
HIV continues to pose a formidable global health challenge, with 1.3 million new infections occurring each year—highlighting the critical need for innovative approaches in HIV prevention. Lenacapavir, developed over 17 years by Gilead teams, is a first-in-class antiretroviral that blocks multiple stages of the HIV life cycle, including nuclear entry and capsid assembly.
“Twice-yearly Yeztugo is one of the most important breakthroughs of modern science and illustrates what’s possible when Gilead innovation, the unwavering commitment of our scientists and the intentional involvement of communities most affected by HIV around the world come together to help address unmet needs in HIV prevention,” said Daniel O’Day, Chairman and CEO of Gilead Sciences. “This Prix Galien Award honors not only the scientific and clinical trial innovation behind Yeztugo, but also its potential public health impact for countries and regions around the world.”
The Prix Galien USA Awards, established in 2007, recognize leading-edge scientific advances in life sciences that enhance human health globally. Awarded annually, the competition is judged by a prestigious committee comprised of Nobel laureates, industry leaders and distinguished individuals in the health sector. The category of Best Pharmaceutical Product is highly competitive, with this year’s nominees including 18 innovative medicines approved by the FDA within the past five years.
The Prix Galien USA Award is one of several recent accolades for Gilead and Yeztugo. For its work in HIV, the company was recently recognized on Fortune's Change the World list, while Yeztugo was chosen as one of TIME’s Best Inventions and named the 2024 Breakthrough of the Year by the journal Science.
About Lenacapavir
Lenacapavir is approved in multiple countries as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV in adults and adolescents who are at risk of HIV acquisition. Lenacapavir is also approved in multiple countries for the treatment of multi-drug-resistant HIV in adults, in combination with other antiretrovirals.
The multi-stage mechanism of action of lenacapavir is distinguishable from other currently approved classes of antiviral agents. While most antivirals act on just one stage of viral replication, lenacapavir is designed to inhibit HIV at multiple stages of its lifecycle and has no known cross resistance exhibited in vitro to other existing drug classes.
Lenacapavir is being evaluated as a long-acting option in multiple ongoing and planned early and late-stage clinical studies in Gilead’s HIV prevention and treatment research program. Lenacapavir is being developed as a foundation for potential future HIV therapies with the goal of offering both long-acting oral and injectable options with several dosing frequencies, in combination or as a mono agent, that help address individual needs and preferences of people and communities affected by HIV.
U.S. Indication for Yeztugo
